"Federal funding for the rail project continues to flow and we continue to receive assurance from the USDOT and the Federal Transit Administration that it is full speed ahead," said Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI). "After 40 years in the making, the rail project is now quickly progressing and I will continue to work towards making a rail system in Hawaii a reality."
The funds were appropriated to the project under President Obama's Fiscal Year 2013 budget, which was approved by the House of Representatives and Senate in March 2012.
"Today's rail funding announcement demonstrates the federal government's ongoing commitment to Honolulu's rail project," Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) said. "This project is already creating jobs and, when completed, will provide transportation options and major traffic relief. In these difficult fiscal times, when decisions about federal funding remain highly competitive, today's development is a reaffirmation that support for Honolulu's rail project remains solid as it moves forward."
