Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley has allocated nearly $650 million in transportation investments for Prince George's County, including $280 million for design work and land acquisition for the proposed Purple Line light rail transit project.

The $280 million will be used to complete right-of-way acquisition and final design for the Purple Line.

The Purple Line is a proposed 16-mile light-rail line extending from Bethesda in Montgomery County to New Carrollton in Prince George’s County. It would provide a direct connection to the Metrorail Red, Green and Orange Lines; at Bethesda, Silver Spring, College Park and New Carrollton. The Purple Line would also connect to MARC, Amtrak, and local bus services.Twenty-one initial station locations have been identified with additional stations under consideration.
