Granite Construction, Inc. (GC) has announced that its joint venture (JV) team has been awarded the design-build contract for the Airport Guideway and Stations project by the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART).

The JV team includes members from Granite Construction Company, Shimmick Construction Co., Inc. and Traylor Bros., Inc. Construction is set to start in spring 2017 with an estimated completion by 2021, representatives say.

GC says the New York Stock Exchange-listed company is booking its 33 percent share of the $875 million JV project into backlog throughout the third quarter of 2016.

The contract entails the construction of more than 5 miles of a new elevated guideway between the Middle Street Transit Center Station and Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.

Representatives say the JV team will also complete the construction of the Pearl Harbor Naval Base transit station, as well as two new stations to be built near the Honolulu International Airport and the Middle Street station.

The project is meant to bring about the third guideway project in a series of efforts to build a 20-mile light-rail system for Honolulu.
