Guideway segment production for Honolulu transit in full swing

Production is underway at a Kalaeloa casting yard, where more than 80 Kiewit employees are busy building the concrete guideway segments that will sit on top of the columns to form the elevated guideway for Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transit's (HART) rail system.
“The production of these segments means we are on schedule,” said HART’s Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Dan Grabauskas. “We will begin placing these guideway segments on the columns in the next few weeks. We are on track and on the right course to complete the project on time, on budget and with an eye on quality.”
Each 50-ton segment is approximately 11 feet long, 30 feet wide and seven feet tall. They are molded from 18 cubic yards of concrete and take five days to make and another 10 days for the concrete to cure. Each segment also goes through numerous inspections and quality checks. About a dozen guideway segments are being produced daily.
Nearly 5,200 segments will be used to form the spans that will make up the 10 miles of guideway between East Kapolei and Aloha Stadium.
