Maryland Transit Administration installs Protran Technology’s rail break detection system

The Maryland Department of Transportation's Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has installed the Protran Technology rail break system.

Jason Lurz, director of rail operations at MTA stated, “The Maryland Transit Administration has been researching technology that would continuously track changes in rail temperature, stress and rail neutral temperature for some time.”

The features of the Protran system that interested MTA included real time continuous monitoring for broken or buckled rail; emergency notification to the railroad in advance of an incident occurring; web-accessible GIS user interface; the assist in rail de-stressing operation and layering other current and future operations in real time, such as weather stations, train speed and location, track worker real time location and mobile assets.

Mike Davis, senior deputy administrator and chief operations officer at MTA said, “MTA holds safety as a top priority for our system and we continually lead the transit industry with technological advances to achieve that goal. We are pleased and proud to be working with Protran Technology on this critically-important initiative.”
