Maryland Transit Administration to close three LRT stations for crossing improvement project

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is launching a track crossing improvement project at Union Avenue and Clipper Mill Road March 14 that will temporarily close three light-rail stations at Mt. Washington, W. Cold Spring and Woodberry.

The construction project consists of removing and replacing 475 feet of ballasted track, including 70 tons of ballast, 120 concrete crossties and more than 950 feet of rail. The track crossing repairs are scheduled to last 10 days until March 24.

The project will result in increased safety and train location awareness with the installation of a new "Train Approaching" warning sign on the south side of Union Avenue. The construction will also make future repairs at the crossing less time consuming.

The crossing at Union Avenue and Clipper Mill Road was installed during the original construction of the transit system in 1991. MTA says the existing rubber panel crossing system for the double-track crossing has degraded, which has forced its replacement.
