SCVTA BART Silicon Valley Berryessa Extension Project named “Neatest Thing in 2013”

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority's (SCVTA) Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Berryessa Extension Project was voted "Best Example of Government Funding" and received an Honor Award for "Neatest Thing in 2013" by the Milpitas Post for its 23rd Annual Reader's Choice Awards.
SCVTA and design build contractor, Skanska, Shimmick Herzog JV, are constructing the 10-mile, two-station extension of the BART rail line into Santa Clara County. The two BART stations are being built in the cities of San Jose and Milpitas.
“After more than a decade of planning, engineering and securing funding, BART Silicon Valley is well into construction. The city of Milpitas’ support and partnership will result in Milpitas residents having convenient access to the regional BART system,” said Carolyn Gonot, BART Silicon Valley chief program officer.
The BART Silicon Valley Berryessa Extension Project is in its second year of construction. There has been significant project progress since the April 2012 groundbreaking. Major accomplishments include: near completion of major utility relocations in the project corridor and station areas, completion of the Kato Road Grade Separation, one of the 11 to be built for the project, completion of the Upper Penitencia Creek environmental mitigation project; near completion of the expansive bridge construction for the Berryessa Station roadway; completion of columns for the Berryessa Station foundation and elevated structure and halfway completion of the Hostetter Grade Separation where BART will trench under the roadway.
