Skanska has been awarded a $66 million contract from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority to design and construct a test track, commissioning facility, parking garage and other facilities near the existing Greenbelt Maintenance Yard in Prince George's County, Md. The contract will be included in the order bookings for Skanska USA Civil for the second quarter 2012.

The new facility will allow WMATA to conduct testing and to commission new and rehabilitated rail vehicles. The project includes design and construction of an approximately 3,000-meter (1.9-mile) test track with traction power, automatic train control and a 15-meter (.009-mile) long mock platform.

It also includes a commissioning facility, providing space for work on up to eight cars at one time and will include an overhead crane, traction power and embedded and pedestal rail. A second floor space will house offices and a conference room. Skanska will also construct a 320-space parking garage.

The facility is being constructed to be able to receive LEED Silver Certification. The project will start in July and is expected to be completed in March 2014.
