DTE Energy rail project to eliminate crossing

DTE Energy says a project to extend a rail line in its rail yard at West Jefferson and Van Horn in Trenton, Mich., will improve safety and traffic flow for local motorists.

The extension of the track will allow longer trains to be held in the yard, eliminating about a dozen train shipments annually. DTE says this will reduce the number of times drivers will have to wait at railroad crossings, as fewer trains will move through the city.

“We are happy to be able to undertake this project that should improve traffic safety and traffic flow in the city of Trenton,” said Brian Kincaid, Trenton Channel Power Plant director, DTE Energy. “We appreciate the assistance and cooperation of Michigan Department of Transportation and city officials in helping plan this project.”

The project also will eliminate a dangerous crossing on Toledo Avenue over CSX railroad tracks at Hoover Street. This crossing was recommended for removal by the Michigan Department of Transportation in 2003 as part of a long-term plan to improve rail crossings in Trenton.

In addition, the project will eliminate the need for trains to park on the tracks at the Lathrop Street crossing.

Construction is scheduled to begin Monday, July 13, with a substantial part of the project estimated to be completed by the end of year.
