Five grade crossings in New Jersey and Ohio will see improvements over the course of the summer.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) say freight railroad contractors will be performing work at two railroad crossing Bridgeton and Millville. The contractors will be doing grading work to reinforce the crossings near Gershal Avenue in Bridgeton and near North 6th Street in Millville.

These projects are included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program, which repairs, upgrades or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) approved the installation of mast-mounted flashing lights and roadway gates at rail crossings in Seneca and Wyandot counties.

CSX Transportation will upgrade the rail crossing at Ward Road/Township Road 43 in Loudon Township, Seneca County. Also in Seneca County, Norfolk Southern will upgrade the rail crossing at Township Road 122 in Reed Township.

Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway (WE) will upgrade the rail crossing at David Road/Township Road 31 in Tymochtee Township, Wyandot County (001-916R).

CSX, NS and WE are responsible for completing construction by April 1, 2016. Project costs will be paid with federal funds.

PUCO is responsible for evaluating Ohio’s public grade crossings to determine the need to install active warning devices. The commission says that since it began implementing these evaluations, the annual number of train-motor vehicle crashes in Ohio has decreased significantly, from 123 in 2001 to 76 in 2014.
