Union Pacific's employee reportable injury rate from January through June was .70, the lowest in its 154-year history.

Reportable employee injury rates are measured by employee injuries reported to the Federal Railroad Administration for every 200,000 employee-hours worked.

The news of the Union Pacific’s first half of year milestone follows its safest year ever in 2015, where it took the claim of the safest Class 1 railroad in the United States based on its 2015 employee reportable injury rate of 0.87.

“Union Pacific’s steady improvement in employee safety is a tribute to our employees who care about each other’s safety and making sure everyone goes home safely,” said Chief Safety Officer Rod Doerr, Union Pacific vice president – Safety. “We will continue focusing on safety until we reach our ultimate goal of zero injuries.”

Union Pacific credits the safety success to its investments in training employees and developing innovative technologies that contribute to a safe work environment.
