Local and federal Canadian officials gathered May 5 to break ground on a grade separation project in Winnipeg, MB.

The Waverley Street Underpass project is a CA$155-million (US$113-million) effort to build an underpass at Waverley Street and Taylor Avenue to replace the grade crossing and will also include road enhancements.

Officials said the project will improve traffic safety, mobility and capacity, as well as enhance pedestrian and cycling opportunities at a location that sees approximately 30,000 vehicles and between 35 and 40 trains per day.

The governments of Canada and Manitoba are each contributing up to CA$45.9 million (US$33.5 million) to this project Canadian National is contributing CA$9.5 million (US$6.9 million) and the city of Winnipeg will cover the balance of the project’s costs.

The Waverley Underpass project is expected to open by the end of 2019 with some minor work such as landscaping continuing into 2020.

“Today’s sod-turning on the Waverley Underpass marks an important milestone towards improving the flow of traffic in this part of the City. As Winnipeg grows towards one million people, it is crucial to have a transportation system that is efficient at moving people and investments like this position Winnipeg to handle steady growth into the future,” said Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman.
