Officials with the province of Ontario say the construction Metrolinx's East Rail Maintenance Facility, which will support GO Transit's planned service expansions including Regional Express Rail program, is well underway.

Most of the underground foundation work for the 500,000-square-foot facility, which is on track to be completed by end of 2017, has been laid and steel frames are beginning to rise. Once complete, it will give GO Transit more space to maintain, inspect, repair and store trains as it adds more service throughout the GO Transit network.

The facility will include capacity to accommodate 13 trains, with the option to expand to accommodate 22 trains in the future; fueling and washing facilities and provisions for future electrification.

The CA$859.2-million (US$625.3-million) project is jointly funded by the Canadian government and the province of Ontario. The federal government is providing an investment of up to CA$94.8 million (US$68.9 million) to support the construction of the facility through the P3 Canada Fund. Ontario is funding the balance of the contract at CA$764.4 million (US$556.3 million).

The East Rail Maintenance Facility will serve as a new rail maintenance facility to complement GO Transit’s existing Willowbrook Maintenance Facility in Etobicoke. Plenary Infrastructure ERMF is the team responsible for designing, building, financing and maintaining the facility for a 30-year term, as per Infrastructure Ontario’s Alternative Financing and Procurement contract.

“It’s great to see progress on the new East Rail Maintenance Facility,” said Steven Del Duca, Ontario’s minister of transportation. “This facility supports our plans to expand GO Transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and is part of Ontario’s Moving Ontario Forward plan, which will mean increased GO service for families in Durham region.”
