GE leads group in Nigeria rail bid

A consortium led by General Electric and including Transnet, South Africa, has been named preferred bidder by the government of Nigeria government for a concession to rehabilitate, finance and operate Nigerian Railways' 2178-mile network.

The consortium also includes SinoHydro, a Chinese infrastructure construction services company, and APM Terminals, a port, terminal and intermodal services provider.

Concession negotiations will now begin and involve a more detailed examination of the consortium’s proposal covering bid value, terms, conditions, scope, assumptions, and timelines, as well as negotiations with the Nigerian government’s defined performance standards.

“We look forward to moving on to the crucial negotiation phase where we will align expectations and finalize specifics in order to develop a strong plan to support the country’s rail infrastructure,” said Thomas Konditi, president and CEO of GE Transportation, Africa.

Nigerian Railways comprises the Lagos-Kaduna-Nguru western line, the Port Harcourt-Kaduna eastern line together with the main spur line from Kafanchan to Maiduguri and other branch lines.
