HNTB adds Thompson as principal tunnel engineer

HNTB Corporation hired Jimmy Thompson as principal tunnel engineer in its national tunnel practice out of its Oakland, Calif., office. Thompson has 30 years of experience in the design and construction of large infrastructure projects and specializes in tunnels and underground facilities.

 

His industry experience from around the world includes design, program management, estimating, planning and programming, contract documentation preparation, site supervision and construction management for transit, highway and water tunnel projects.

“Jimmy is a highly qualified tunnel and construction expert with leadership experience on important and high-profile underground projects,” said Nasri Munfah, PE, HNTB chair tunnel services and senior vice president. “As HNTB continues to provide solutions for complex tunnel programs in California and around the world, his knowledge, expertise and leadership abilities are invaluable to our clients.”

Prior to joining HNTB, Thompson served another consulting firm as underground design lead for the project management team on the Red Line Light Rail Transit Project in Tel Aviv, Israel. His international experience also includes serving as tunnel design manager for the Eurasia Tunnel in Istanbul; team leader on the Shatin to Central Link project in Hong Kong and a design engineer on the Channel Tunnel project between England and France.

Additionally, Thompson has served in high-level positions on California projects, including as lead tunnel engineer for the California High-Speed Rail project; lead tunnel engineer for the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Corridor project in San Jose and senior tunnel engineer for Sacramento’s Lower Northwest Interceptor Pipeline.
