In memoriam: Dr. Arnold D. Kerr

Dr. Arnold D. Kerr passed away on May 27, 2012 at the age of 84.

Professor Kerr taught railroad engineering at the graduate and undergraduate levels at several major U.S. universities, including the University of Delaware (1978 untill his retirement in 2004), Princeton University (1973-1978) and New York University (1959-1973). He advised numerous railroad-related Ph.D. and master’s theses. In addition, he was founder of the Institute for Railroad Engineering in Wilmington, Del., which instructed more than two thousand railroad professionals during its more than two decades of activity.

Kerr was an internationally recognized authority in the area of railroad track mechanics and is the author of the widely-used railroad engineering text, Fundamentals of Railroad Track Engineering, together with more than 125 technical papers and four books.

Kerr was a life member of AREMA, a fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a fellow in the Center of Advanced Study at the University of Delawareker and long serving member of Transportation Research Board and National Academy of Science committees.

He is survived by his wife Berta Borgenicht Kerr, their children Regina Kerr Alonzo and Orin Kerr and two grandchildren.
