Tunnel expert Stone joins HNTB

Charles Stone will join HNTB as the company's principal tunnel engineer.

Stone will join the firm’s New York City office on May 30 and work with clients nationwide. He brings more than 25 years of experience on tunneling, shaft and mining construction projects. Stone’s area of specialization the construction of underground structures in rock, ranging from large drill and blast underground subway caverns to tunnel boring machine (TBM)-driven tunnels.

At HNTB, Stone’s responsibilities will include investigating complex technical problems and serving as a senior technical specialist on major underground projects. He also will provide independent analysis and quality control of underground work performed by other professionals.

Stone has been published many times, including “Portal Headwall Design: Ohio River Bridges EEC” in North American Tunneling Journal, “Top-Down Construction for Tunnel Portal Walls in Karstic Limestone” at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC, 2015), and “New York Subway Caverns and Crossovers – Update on Initial Lining Design” (RETC, 2007).

Stone earned a doctorate in mining engineering/rock mechanics from Michigan Technological University; a Master of Business Administration, executive management, from Ashland University; a master’s degree in mining engineering/mineral processing and a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering from the University of Kentucky.
