The Valley Metro Rail Board of Directors has approved a base five-year contract with Alternate Concepts, Inc. (ACI), to provide rail transportation services for the 26-mile system in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa, Ariz.

With this contract, Boston-based ACI will continue to manage, coordinate and control all activities related to the operations of the service. ACI began service operations for Valley Metro Rail prior to the rails’ opening in December 2008. The company also expanded the original 20 miles to include six new miles of extensions, added in 2015 and 2016.

“ACI takes great pride and ownership in delivering robust rail operations, which sets them apart as a service provider,” said Ray Abraham, Valley Metro chief operations officer. “After nine years of providing rail service for Valley Metro, the men and women of ACI continue to have a strong commitment to quality operations.”

ACI provides rail service 365 days per year, operating up to 22 hours per day. Fiscal Year 2016 served 15.6 million passengers with an on-time performance of 93.4 percent. The Valley Metro Rail Board of Directors authorized the execution of the new contract with one three-year option and one two-year option beginning July 1, 2017.
