Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) revised its schedule for three current and future SafeTrack surges.

WMATA says added weekend shutdowns and other schedule adjustments will allow for the completion of additional work on crossover tracks, address new safety recommendations and account for the effects of extreme heat, humidity and other weather impacts.

The changes will affect the dates and sequence of the remaining SafeTrack surges scheduled through the end of October. Additional schedule changes for Surges 10-15, commencing October and later, will be announced in mid-September.

WMATA’s current surge will be extended through Aug. 21 and a new weekend shutdown will occur Aug. 20-21 to complete necessary switch rehabilitation work. WMATA said as of Friday, Aug. 12, track and structures work for this surge was on schedule with crews replacing almost 3,000 crossties, repairs made to gates and signage and vegetation being cleared from the track bed. Power and automatic train control renewal efforts were slightly behind schedule due to extreme heat the area experienced.
