Axion International received its second purchase order from San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit for switch ties. Axion says its ECOTRAX ties has no chemicals or preservatives added and can be reused at the end of their useful lifecycle, eliminating standard disposal issues.

“Using recycled plastic ties manufactured by Axion makes economic sense but we are also excited by the environmental implications,” said BART Board President John McPartland. “Using these ties only adds to our long-standing dedication to environmental responsibility. There’s a good reason that the Federal Transit Administration has named BART the cleanest system.”

For the BART order, Axion’s rail ties will range from 10-foot to 22-foot. The total amount of plastic diverted from landfills is estimated to be about 115,000 pounds of post-consumer plastic.

Axion’s ECOTRAX ties are engineered using the company’s patented 100 percent recycled formula. The company says ECOTRAX ties have helped divert millions of pounds of plastic bottles and waste into useful products that will last decades.
