The Regional Transportation District (RTD) of Denver, Colo., marked its first delivery of rail to be used in its Southeast Rail Extension.

The 2.3-mile long extension will require 1,000 tons of rail to complete the project. RTD took delivery of about 20 percent of the total rail needed in November. The rail was supplied by Progress Rail from its Pueblo, Colo., plant.

The $233.1-million extension is scheduled to open for revenue service in 2019 and will add 2.3 miles of line, three additional stations, including Kiss-n-Rides at Sky Ridge Avenue near Sky Ridge Medical Center and the future Lone Tree City Center and a 1,300-slot Park-n-Ride at RidgeGate Parkway.

Construction on the extension began in May 2016 and Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Inc. was awarded the design/build contract for the project.

RTD says the completion of the Southeast Rail Line Extension will serve a growing community in the next 20 years as the RidgeGate development is built out. When the extension is completed residents will be able to travel on one train from the RidgeGate station via the I-225 Rail Line through Aurora to Peoria Station and connect to the commuter train to Denver International Airport or stay on one train and travel to Union Station in downtown Denver.
