Metra has announced a major track project to go into effect on its Metra Electric line to University Park beginning Aug. 22 that is expected to continue through Oct. 1.

The project, with a total cost estimated at $1.5 million, entails resurfacing track on a nearly 17-mile stretch and replacing 10,000 ties along the line between the University Park and Kensington/115th St. stations.

Metra is also expected to replace six switches at its Richton Park Yard, officials say, along with a rail replacement to take place at Randolph St. and 18th St.

“Projects like these are the foundation of reliable service,” said Metra Executive Director/CEO Don Orseno. “Keeping to a regular schedule of track maintenance allows us to continue to provide service at the speeds and levels our customers expect.”

Construction schedules along the line go into effect Aug. 22 for midday and weekend trains and are expected to continue through Oct. 1. Construction schedules may be added through the end of October if additional time is needed to complete the work, officials say.

Work is set to take place along the tracks seven days a week throughout the entirety of the project, and most of the construction is expected to occur between weekday mornings and evening rush hours as well as during weekends to minimize effects on passenger service.

Officials added that passengers should expect delays of up to 10 minutes throughout the duration of the project.
