The $19.9-million project is part of the Piedmont Improvement Program, a series of projects to improve the rail corridor between Raleigh and Charlotte for freight and passenger trains.
The construction of a second track will allow trains to pass each other more easily, which will in turn improve travel times for trains along the Raleigh to Charlotte corridor. Closing and upgrading crossings will help better separate vehicle and train traffic, improving safety.
The estimated project completion date is November 16, 2016.
