The GO Regional Express Rail (GO RER) program has reached a milestone with the completion of the Dufferin Street Bridge Widening project in the Greater Toronto Area.

The bridge, which passes over Queen Street West, was widened to accommodate the additional track needed to increase service levels between Toronto and Barrie on the Barrie GO corridor.

Work to widen the bridge began in July 2016 and a CA$8.4-million contract (US$6.7-million) for the work was awarded to EllisDon.

“We are committed to giving people more travel options by expanding transit service. Finishing the construction on the Dufferin Street Bridge on-time and on-budget is proof of the progress Ontario is making to deliver on a transformative plan that will enhance the quality of life for all commuters while keeping the region moving for generations to come,” said Ontario Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca.

The Go RER program is part of a CA$21.3-billion (US$16.9-billion) transformation of the GO network, which is expected grow to nearly 6,000 weekly trips during the next 10 years.
