Crews are continuing work on the Chicago Transit Authority Purple Line viaduct at Greenleaf Street in Evanston. Rail service along the Purple Line will be temporarily suspended from the Howard Terminal to the Davis Street station Friday, June 8 until 4 a.m. Monday, June 11.

The $15.5 million Purple Line Viaduct project will reduce slow zones and improve travel time by replacing three aging viaducts along the line at Greenleaf, Dempster and Grove streets in Evanston. The project will also result in new abutments, retaining walls, foundations and new waterproofing and drainage systems. Other project work includes rail and crosstie replacement, new landscaping and lighting enhancements under the bridges.

Funding for the project is provided by an Illinois Department of Transportation grant through the Regional Transportation Authority.

Work is already underway and being performed by contractor Kiewit Infrastructure, who won the $10.3 million contract for these improvements through a competitive bid process.

The work included in the current project includes:
• Replacement of existing concrete viaducts at Greenleaf, Dempster and Grove, with new, longer steel bridge spans. New bridges will include new ties, rail and ballast along with new drainage systems.
• New sidewalks, fencing and landscaping at each viaduct.
• Replacing a 320-foot long timber retaining wall north of Greenleaf with new pre-cast concrete wall.
• Rehabilitation of existing retaining walls along Chicago Avenue between South Blvd. and Madison Street and adjacent to the Greenleaf Street viaduct (a total of 2,064 feet of wall repairs).

Site work at all three viaduct locations is planned to be complete by end of 2012.
