The WTD is rail-to-rail and rail-to-road grade separation that will eliminate a major bottleneck at the most heavily-used rail crossing in Canada. When completed, GO trains on the Kitchener line will pass below Canadian Pacific freight lines and, according to GO Transit, this will improve service reliability, reduce noise and allow for future service improvements to reduce congestion in the northwest of Toronto.
In late May, GO trains started running below the CP tracks at the West Toronto Diamond and in late June, a bridge to remove the diamond crossing, which separated the GO tracks from CP's North Toronto Subdivision tracks, was installed.
The final bridge needed before GO's second section of track can be moved below ground will be installed at the end of July.
According to GO Transit's website, the project is still on schedule to be complete in 2014.
