North Carolina Department of Transportation awarded a contract to preserve the bascule span bridge on the Carolina Coastal Railroad over the Newport River in Carteret County.

The $3.6 million contract was awarded to PCL Civil Constructors Inc. of Tampa, Fla. This is the Carolina Coastal Railroad bascule span bridge that connects Morehead City to Radio Island. The work will consist of steel, mechanical, electrical and substructure repairs.

The work will start October 1 and is scheduled to be complete within a year.

This is one of 23 contracts totaling $246.7 million recently awarded by Conti for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 5.9 percent, or $15.4 million, below NCDOT estimates.
