The construction of a modern railway bridge across the Lehigh River to create a connection between two divisions of Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad is closer to fruition as a second $5 million grant has been awarded by the Pennsylvania State Transportation Commission.

The $14-million project, known as the Nesquehoning Bridge Phase II, will create a direct route from Philadelphia to Binghamton, N.Y. The bridge is 1,200 feet long.

“This new transportation infrastructure will create a stronger economic base for Carbon, Luzerne, Schuylkill and Berks Counties, not to mention the eastern portion of our commonwealth,” Chief Executive Officer Andrew Muller, Jr. stated. “The RBMN is privately owned and growing. Our success is closely tied to the economic expansion of the communities that we serve, and this new infrastructure will enable us to improve our service to help grow these areas. That means more and better jobs for everyone.”

This grant was part of 31 grants announced last month by the Pennsylvania State Transportation Commission.
