Work began December 4 on Caltrain's San Mateo Bridges Replacement Project, an infrastructure project that will provide seismic upgrades to four aging railway passes on the Peninsula.

Crews will install and monitor vector control as part of the initial site prep work and set-up for the project, a joint effort between Caltrain and the city of San Mateo.

On December 15, crews will be clearing and grubbing the right-of-way in the project area and installing ballast retainers the Monte Diablo, Santa Inez and Poplar bridges, trains to will run on a single track between the San Mateo and Burlingame Caltrain stations.

Caltrain is working to replace the bridges at Tilton, Monte Diablo, Santa Inez and Poplar avenues. The bridges are more than 100 years old and must be replaced to meet current local, state and federal seismic safety standards.

The $38-million project is expected to take approximately two years to complete and is being paid for by a combination of local, state and federal funds.
