Washington state regulators approved funds to improve the safety at railroad crossings in Clark County.

The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission approved $19,600 from the Grade Crossing Protective Fund for Clark County to upgrade active warning devices at 10 railroad-highway crossings.

The county will replace incandescent lights with energy-efficient, long-lasting LED-type flashing lights. These upgrades will improve the visibility and safety at each crossing.

The crossings are on a rail line owned by Clark County. Portland-Vancouver Junction Railroad and Chelatchie Prairie Railroad operate on the line.

The upgrades must be completed by Aug. 1, 2012. State GCPF funding is limited to $19,684 for the project. Clark County will supply all labor and equipment to install the LED lights.
