Kentucky ready to improve grade crossings across the state

Kentucky is looking to improve multimodal freight transportation across the state, as evident by $2.5 million in funding grants that was recently released by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and the Division of Planning and Division of Right of Way and Utilities.
The money will go toward at-grade crossings, with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet supplying $1.3 million.
“We’re proud to invest in the state’s railway system by partnering with companies to ensure safe, reliable and efficient freight transportation,” says KYTC Secretary Greg Thomas. “This funding will be put to good use to improve the safety of our rail infrastructure.”
A total of 20 safety improvement projects will come from the $2.5 million. Sixteen crossings will be reconstructed, three signals will be upgraded and another crossing will be completely replaced. Awards have been issued to Paducah and Louisville Railroad, RJ Corman Railroad Group, Fredonia Valley Railroad and Louisville Metro Government.
During the award process, KYTC looked at crash history, vehicle, train and truck traffic, physical condition, project cost and federal railroad crossing score, among other items.
