Hurricane season is continuing to throw fast pitches in the Gulf Coast strike zone. Norfolk Southern released a service alert yesterday regarding Tropical Storm Delta, which is reproduced below. The New York Times and Accuweather report that the storm is expected to develop into a hurricane as it approaches the Gulf Coast this week, and landfall is expected to occur Friday somewhere along the coast of Louisiana. Six to 12 inches of rain is expected.

Here is the Norfolk Southern service alert:

Norfolk Southern is monitoring Tropical Storm Delta, which is currently expected to impact the Gulf Coast late this week.

The New Orleans Flood Protection Authority plans to start closing the floodgates in and around New Orleans, Wednesday, Oct. 7. Shipments destined to or traveling through New Orleans will be impacted. At this time, we do not know the duration of the impact.

Precautionary actions are being taken to protect infrastructure and rail equipment is being repositioned away from low-lying areas around New Orleans. NS is working with customers located in the forecasted region to identify switching needs and with interchange partners to move certain shipments over alternate interchange gateways. Ongoing updates will be provided as this storm system progresses.

RT&S will continue to monitor and report on this story as events warrant.
