A new collectively bargained agreement has been ratified by members of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division-International Brotherhood of Teamsters (BMWED) working at Michigan-based Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad (LS&I), the union reported May 2.

The members, who belong to the Burlington System Division (BSD) Local Lodge 1489, have secured “general wage increases in line with Presidential Emergency Board 250 as well as a 4/10 work-week rule, service recognition bonuses and other paid time-off advances,” according to BMWED (download agreement below).

“I am extremely proud of Lodge 1489,” BSD Vice General Chairman Tom Steinbrenner said. “Not only did they have a 94% ballot return [representing 16 out of 17 members], but they stayed informed throughout the bargaining process by attending bargaining updates via Zoom, attending their lodge meetings, keeping in contact with Local Chairman Scott Shepich, and keeping in contact with BSD system officers like George Loveland and National Division Vice President Staci Moody-Gilbert.” (Moody-Gilbert is one of Railway Age‘s 23 Women in Rail honorees for 2022.)

Separately, approximately 70 maintenance-of-way employees from Genesee & Wyoming (G&W) Railroad Engineering Services voted April 13 to join the BMWED. The new members are the first of G&W’s mobile gangs to join the Brotherhood.
