While COVID-19 has been with us since the beginning of 2020, and transportation leaders devoted thousands of hours to determine how to make public transportation safer during the pandemic, the autumn and winter months are shaping up to be the worst part of the virus spread so far. As of 2:58 ET today, American deaths from the virus are at 281,367, and we’ve seen 14,420,790 cases in the U.S.

So, while effective vaccines may be on the horizon, and the medical community is improving its ability to treat patients with the virus, the country is still gripped by the pandemic. This affects nearly all sectors of business, including the nation’s public transportation industry.

Last week, the American Public Transportation Association released Moving the Nation Through Crisis: Mobility Recovery & Restoration Task Force Report. This report summarizes an APTA task force’s work to support public transit agencies and reposition the industry for an essential role in the nation’s post-pandemic economic recovery.

Since RT&S has not reported on the impact COVID-19 on public transportation recently, we thought that readers would find this report useful.
