Boston’s Green Line Extension on schedule and on budget

Somerville officials hope to get money back now that the Green Line Extension project is healthy.

The Green Line Extension in Boston should be ripe with activity come 2022. The $2.3 billion project remains on schedule for a late 2021 completion.

The 4.7-mile extension will connect Cambridge, Somerville and Medford, placing 80% of Bostonians within a half-mile from a T stop. Currently only 20% live within that distance.

When complete, GLX Constructors, a joint venture of Fluor Enterprises Inc., The Middlesex Corp., Herzog Contracting Corp., and Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Inc., will have placed 17 miles of track, 100,000 railroad ties, almost 4 miles of pilings, and 22 million lb of steel girders.

The tracks will be turned over to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, and Union Station in Somerville will be the first station open. The Medford Branch station will go online in December. Equipment and infrastructure will be tested over the coming months.

The Green Line Extension is projected to move 50,000 riders a day, and the project is currently on budget.
