The Colorado Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) have given the Regional Transportation District (RTD) approval to remove crossing attendants, or flaggers, from six of the 11 at-grade crossings along the University of Colorado A Line.

The line spans between Denver Union Station and Denver International Airport, officials said.

The approved at-grade crossings include: Havana, Chambers, Clayton, Dahlia, Holly and Steele streets.

Denver Transit Partners (DTP), the operator of the rail line under contract with RTD, will start the removal of the flaggers in phases beginning the evening of June 22, 2018, from four crossings—Clayton, Steele, Holly and Dahlia— and the evening of June 25, 2018, from two crossings: Havana and Chambers.

RTD says the agency is collaborating with the CPUC and FRA on the final approvals and the flagger-removal process for the five remaining at-grade crossings. The approvals are a key step forward in the process to establish quiet zones along the University of Colorado A Line, officials said.

RTD continues to urge pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists to remain aware of and obey all signs and safety alert devices at all at-grade crossings.
