Herzog Transit Services, Inc. will deliver operation and maintenance services for Orange County’s first modern streetcar system under a $45M five-year contract with two, two-year optional extension periods.

Herzog Transit Services, Inc. (HTSI) has been selected by the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) as the operations and maintenance (O&M) provider for the new OC Streetcar which will connect downtown Santa Ana and Garden Grove in Southern California. The 4.1-mile route is currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2022. OCTA made the announcement on May 27 following approval by the OCTA Board of Directors.

During the 17-month startup and pre-revenue operations period, HTSI will work with designers, constructors, and streetcar builders in preparation for passenger service. HTSI will hire and train staff, test, and commission the line. Once the revenue operations phase begins, HTSI will be responsible for daily streetcar operations and routine maintenance on the eight-car fleet. The streetcar will run seven days a week operating at 10 to 15-minute intervals and serve 10 passenger stops along the corridor.

“This has been a project that we have tracked and worked on for more than two years. We believe the OC Streetcar is a natural fit for Herzog because it is very similar to the streetcar services we currently provide in Kansas City and Oklahoma City,” says Norm Jester, Vice President of Corporate Development for Herzog. “We are very pleased with the outcome and appreciate the vote of confidence from the OCTA staff and Board of Directors. We look forward to getting down to business.”

HTSI and its subsidiary, TransitAmerica Services, Inc., deliver FRA- and FTA-compliant services for 13 rail properties across North America, including new service startups and transitions from prior operators. HTSI transports more than 37 million riders annually and provides O&M services for streetcar, light rail, commuter rail, and heavy/metro rail modes of transportation.
