L.A.’s Airport Metro Connect project gets moving

L.A. Metro’s Crenshaw-LAX line should be complete later this year.

Dirt finally moved on the site of the Airport Metro Connector (AMC) project in Los Angeles.

An official groundbreaking was held on June 21 at the site of a new light-rail station that will one day connect Los Angeles International Airport to the L.A. Metro transit system. Fliers, and those picking up or dropping off fliers, will be able to take the train to and from LAX.

The AMC project will be the ninth station on the Crenshaw/LAX route. The Crenshaw/LAX light-rail line is still under construction, and when finished it will join Metro light rail with LAX’s Automated People Mover. The $898.6 million AMC project is expected to be complete by 2024 and the people mover should be done by 2023. The people mover will be 2.25 miles long and will be an elevated rail line. The AMC project will receive some funding from Measure R, which was passed in 2008, and Measure M, which was approved by voters eight years later.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was on hand during the AMC ceremony and said L.A. residents have been waiting their entire lives for a light-rail line that runs to and from LAX.

The AMC project is in a group of 28 projects that will help L.A. handle traffic during the 2028 Olympics.
