An Olympic event is about to be completed in Los Angeles.

The Crenshaw-LAX light-rail route is expected to be finished this year and is a key segment of L.A.’s plan to bolster its public transportation leading up to the 2028 Summer Olympic Games.

The $2.1 billion project has endured setbacks that did extend the construction timeline. The line was originally supposed to open in 2019, but construction issues created delays and the COVID-19 pandemic created a worker shortage. The most recent issue involved contractors incorrectly installing rebar at several sites along the line. The error was causing settlement in walls that support a rail bridge over La Brea Avenue near downtown Inglewood. The steel support structure needed to anchor rail on bridge and tunnels also needed to be fixed in certain areas.

According to contractor Walsh-Shea Corridor Constructors, crews are in the final phases of testing and finishing out all the work and improvements done on the project.

The Crenshaw-LAX route is 8.5 miles long and will move passengers from Mid-City through Los Angeles before ending at South Bay. The line also will serve LAX, where people will be able to hop on a people mover en route to a terminal or rental car facility.
