Texas Central has always said it wants to be a good neighbor, but its yard is a total mess.

About a dozen homes that sit on property purchased by the high-speed rail company on Plantation Drive in Waller, Texas, are deteriorating rapidly. According to Waller County Judge Trey Duhon, the houses have not been maintained and are falling apart. He said there are broken windows, broken doors, weeds, and excessive grass growth. Duhon also added the houses have become a place for drugs and rats.

The poor conditions have impacted property values around the area. Duhon has been posting pictures of the houses on social media.

Last week, Texas Central made its first social media post in almost four months when it touted a trip to Japan with the mayor of Houston, Sylvester Turner, and other local officials.

Sylvester said high-speed rail is an idea “whose time has come for Texas and the United States.” He added the group had productive and constructive discussions about Houston’s high-speed rail in Japan.

Duhon said the county will start nuisance proceedings on the properties in the hopes that Texas Central will clean up the area.
