The Transportation Planning Organization Governing Board for Miami-Dade has been considering options for a mass-transit project.

The agency has settled on commuter rail to run on Brightline tracks in the Miami-Dade area. The route for the commuter service will be from MiamiCentral in downtown Miami to the suburb of Aventura, which is just less than 20 miles to the north.

The amount of funding required for the project is $345 million, and $16 million for annual maintenance. According to plans, the project will receive 50% funding from the federal government, 25% from the county, and 25% by the Florida DOT.

There will be seven possible stations along the route:

  • MiamiCentral (an existing intercity station)
  • Wynwood 27th Street,
  • Design District 40th Street
  • El Portal 79th Street
  • North Miami 123rd Street
  • FIU Biscayne 151st Street
  • Aventura 196th Street (also a future intercity station)
