NJ Transit to boost awareness of travel accommodations

NJ Transit is ramping up its efforts to make passengers faced with mobility challenges aware of their public transportation options. 

The public transportation system said in a statement that it plans to produce as many as eight short-form videos highlighting accessibility accommodations along available along its rail, light-rail and other services made available to older adults, customers with lower incomes, people with disabilities and veterans, as well as any other passengers who may face transportation and mobility challenges.

“Transportation plays a major part in one’s quality of life and the first step in gaining access to the transportation network is becoming familiar with the travel options and how to utilize them,” said NJ Transit president and CEO Kevin Corbett. “I’m pleased we are offering this educational outreach so potential customers can feel more confident in opening the door to the transit system and enjoying the independence that transportation brings.”

The videos are intended to highlight enhancements NJ Transit has made to its services during the past two decades, officials said.

The planned videos will explain offerings such as the reduced fare program and how to use NJ Transit’s smartphone application.

Each video will be available at njtransit.com as well as on social media. The videos will also be shown at various travel training and outreach programs to be hosted throughout the state and made available in seven languages.

As part of the project, officials said NJ Transit received an Access and Mobility Partnership Grant from the Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

NJ Transit was awarded its full requested grant of $60,600. According to a statement, the public transit agency is required to allocate $17,400 for a total project cost of $78,000.  The project is set for completion within the 18-month timeframe required by the grant.

In May of 2019, RT&S reported that NJ Transit had appointed Faisal Jameel as its new chief technical officer.
