With Facebook back on board, it’s time for the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans) to face time with residents about the Dumbarton Rail Corridor project.

The agency is holding a virtual meeting on March 15 to get public input on the 18-mile line that will connect Redwood City and Union City. The route also will merge Caltrain with BART. Stops will be at Menlo Park, East Palo Alto, Fremont and Union City.

Back in 2018, SamTrans joined Facebook and the Plenary Group to form a partnership for the project called Cross Bay Transit Partners. The goal of the group is to facilitate the needed state and federal environmental impact analyses. The pandemic caused Facebook to re-evaluate its position, but later the social media giant decided it would stick with the group until pre-environmental analysis work was done.

Conceptual alternatives for the project are currently being developed, and the hope is the alternatives are finalized in the coming weeks.

On March 15 residents will be allowed to weigh in on two potential routes and four modes of transportation (commuter rail transit, light-rail transit, bus rapid transit and autonomous vehicle transit).

The project could cost as much as $3 billion and does have funding resources. Money could come from the Regional Measure 3 and San Mateo County’s Measure W. The Federal Transportation Administration and U.S. DOT also could provide assistance.
