Innovative new technique got the customer shelter in place quickly.

Overnight work means passengers have seen big changes at Eglinton GO Station.

A new canopy was installed over on the north side of the tracks, in four stages, between March 25 and 28, Metrolinx reported May 3. Upgrades at Eglinton GO are part of the GO Expansion program.

Like when the south canopy was installed in September 2022, a new technique was used to reduce noise and get the main work done overnight, reducing the impact on the station’s customers and neighbors alike.

Each of the four sections were lifted between 1:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. to minimize customer disruption, with the team working around the clock on supporting activities that were necessary before and after each lift.

The canopies are both 137 m long, and weigh about 25,000 kg. Factoring in the custom engineered lifting cradle and rigging, the biggest lift was over 47,000 kg.

A team of about 10 engineers and construction professionals has been planning this over the past months. The actual installation required a crew of about 25 for each night.

With the second canopy installed at Eglinton GO, this marks the completion of this phase of work. The next major change that passengers will notice is opening of the new west tunnel, due in mid-May.
