Call me when the pandemic is over. That is the message CSX sent to New Philadelphia, Ohio, which wants to purchase the Class 1’s line in Tuscarawas County.

Rusty Orben, CSX’s resident vice president for Ohio and Michigan, sent a letter to the Economic Development and Finance Alliance of Tuscarawas County (EDFA), expressing that the decision to reject the offer did not come easily. However, CSX encouraged the EDFA to reach out when the coronavirus pandemic is over.

The county wants to purchase the line so it could increase freight traffic and use it for excursion trains between the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum and Dover. R.J. Corman Railroad is currently leasing the track, which begins south of Uhrichsville and ends at Dover, and serves four customers on the line.

CSX also told the EDFA that it would connect the county with the Class 1’s business development rep in Indianapolis.
