A fatal accident at a railroad crossing in Florida will keep the crossing closed for several weeks.

The accident happened on Friday, April 10, at the Cypress Creek Road crossing west of I-95 in Fort Lauderdale. An Amtrak Silver Meteor was traveling northbound when it struck a black car. The impact was so severe the black car was thrown into a pair of railroad signal box housings located just off the tracks. The driver of the car was killed.

Victor Garcia, spokesman for the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, says the damage will take several weeks to repair.

In the meantime, flaggers will be at the crossing to handle car and train traffic.
