Herzog Contracting, Stacy and Witbeck, Inc. awarded streetcar extension project in K.C.

Herzog Contracting Corp. and Stacy Witbeck, Inc. have been awarded a streetcar extension project in Kansas City.

KC Streetcar Constructors (KCSC), a joint venture of Herzog Contracting Corp. and Stacy and Witbeck, Inc., has been awarded the Construction-Manager-at-Risk (CMAR) contract to begin preconstruction activities for the Kansas City Streetcar Main Street Extension project.

The new 3.6-mile extension will continue south from Union Station and connect two of the largest employment centers in the area, the Central Business District and Country Club Plaza. The route will include 16 streetcar stops on Main Street through Midtown, Westport, the Museum District, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus. The existing vehicle maintenance facility also will be expanded to accommodate additional streetcars for the system.

In 2015, KCSC successfully completed the construction of the original 2.2-mile modern streetcar system, which runs from River Market to Union Station in downtown Kansas City, Mo. In addition, Herzog Transit Services, Inc. was contracted to operate and maintain the line. Since the opening in 2016, the streetcar system is still seeing an increase in ridership with more than 8 million rides to date.

“The new extension will offer a dramatic improvement to the current streetcar infrastructure and will connect already thriving areas of the city,” said Scott Norman, vice president of Herzog Contracting, Corp.

The project is one of the city’s largest transportation initiatives and will improve mobility, safety, and economic opportunities for the metropolitan area of Kansas City. Construction will begin in late 2021, with the new extension expected to be open by 2025.
