Light-rail construction in Toronto continues to boom

The new Ontario Line will be 15.5 km long.

The city of Toronto is continuing to ride the momentum of transit expansion. The Eglinton Crosstown light-rail project continues to make progress, and on June 2 the Ontario government signaled the start of another project.

Officials issued two requests for qualifications (RFQ) for the Ontario Line subway project. A third one will be issued later. All three contracts will be public-private partnerships (P3).

The Ontario Line will be 15.5 km long and will go from Exhibition/Ontario Place to the Ontario Science Centre. There is expected to be 15 stations and 17 multimodal connections to GO Transit, existing TTC subway stations, streetcar lines and the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit line.

The first two P3s cover rolling stock systems, an operations and maintenance contract for the entire line and a design-build-finance contract for the southern end of the Ontario Line.

Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx will review the RFQ submissions and narrow the list down to a small group that can qualify for request for proposals this fall.
