Silver Bow County in Montana is welcoming a $2.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Economic Development Administration, and the money will go towards a Class 1 rail project.

An $11 million project will build five rail tracks to serve as interchange and storage tracks. Taxes will supply $9 million in funding. The additional rail will help serve BNSF and Union Pacific, and also will give a jolt to the local economy.

Officials are hoping the investment in infrastructure will create $63 million in private investment. Just the prospect of the rail project has attracted two investors: Montana Craft Malt and Ergon. A third prospect is in the negotiation phase.

The project could get going as early as next spring.
