Rain knocks out railroad bridge in Colorado
Written by RT&S StaffHeavy rain has shut down a tourist railroad route in Cortez, Colo.
The series of storms knocked debris into the Animas River and created a logjam, which in turn caused Elk Creek to rise significantly. About 40 ft of track and a railroad bridge used by Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are now impassable.
A hiker spotted the damage and called railroad officials. The route is expected to be closed for eight to 16 weeks, shutting down a line that runs from Durango to Silverton.
The railroad will be making limited runs from Rockwood to Cascade.
